HOCD

Homosexual OCD, also known as HOCD, is considered to be one of the least comprehended subtypes of the obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is characterized by frequent harassing thoughts concerning the sexual orientation and usually results in a lot of fear and confusion. Sadly, HOCD is the subject of myths, which complicates when individuals seek treatment. Myths are sometimes hard to explain, but let us give them a go.

Myth 1: HOCD is only a phase.

Reality: HOCD is not temporary. It is an acknowledged manifestation of OCD that might last months or even years to treat unless it is treated appropriately. It is neither about confusion nor exploration but about obsession, anxiety.

Myth 2: HOCD is that you are gay inside.

Fact: A lot of individuals wrongly assume that HOCD is caused by suppressed homosexual feelings. Factually, the majority of HOCD sufferers consider themselves straight and they are not excited by their intrusive thoughts but in fact, the thoughts are traumatizing to them.

Myth 3: Individuals that have HOCD are homophobes.

Fact: Not everybody who has HOCD is anti-gay. The disorder has to do with unwanted thoughts not personal beliefs or prejudices. Indeed, most people with HOCD do not have a problem with the rights of LGBTQ+ activists.

Myth 4: When the thought excites you then it must be true.

Facts: Individuals that have HOCD tend to mix the physical sensations that produce anxiety with arousal. This is further compounded by the fact that the body may react to stress and fear in a manner that would be misconstrued.

Myth 5: HOCD cannot be treated.

Truth: The positive thing is that HOCD can be treated. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) have demonstrated to be very effective in reducing compulsions and bringing clarity to people.

The initial step in recovering is knowledge about HOCD. As long as people receive the necessary support, they shall be capable of regaining their peace of mind and live without doubting it all the time.

It's time to recover. Let me help you!
