Contamination OCD is an obsession with dirt, germs, and other substances that the individual finds repulsive. Those with this type of OCD may become overly focused on preventing the spread of germs and engaging in ritualistic cleaning and sanitizing. They may also experience anxiety in public places and avoid touching certain objects or surfaces.

The Treatment of OCD

OCD can be difficult to treat, but there are a variety of treatment options available. Depending on the severity and type of OCD, treatment may include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), medication, or a combination of both.

Cognitive-behavioral-therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on changing thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to the symptoms of OCD. CBT often involves teaching the person strategies for managing their intrusive thoughts and behaviors, and increasing their ability to tolerate stress.

Medication is another form of treatment for OCD. There are several different types of medications that have been shown to be effective in treating OCD. These include selective-serotonin-reuptake-inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, and antipsychotics.
