OCD Perfectionism: Signs and Treatment

OCD Perfectionism

When perfectionism motivates us to reach our objectives and pursue excellence, it may be a beneficial attribute. Perfectionism is the unwavering pursuit of flawlessness. On the other hand, when it goes too far, it can develop into the crippling disorder known as Perfectionism Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). We will examine the signs of Perfectionism OCD in this blog post, as well as discuss Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a successful treatment strategy.

Signs of OCD and Perfectionism

  1. Excessive Worry about Mistakes: An intense dread of making even the smallest error is one of the main signs of perfectionism OCD. This disorder can cause people to continuously go over their work, even for small mistakes, and paralyse them from the dread of making mistakes.
  2. Fixation on Orderliness: Individuals suffering from OCD and perfectionism frequently have a strong need for everything to be in order. They could take too long to put things in order, straighten things, or constantly rearrange their environment in an effort to get rid of things they think are imperfect.
  3. Dread of Negative Evaluation: People with perfectionism and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are frequently extremely sensitive to criticism and dread being judged poorly by others. This dread may cause someone to retreat from relationships entirely, shun social situations, or need continual reassurance.
  4. Repeated Checking: People who suffer from Perfectionism OCD may exhibit obsessive behaviours including repeatedly reviewing their emails, assignments, and other chores. The enormous dread of making a mistake or missing anything crucial is what motivates this constant checking.
  5. Intrusive Thoughts: Persistent, upsetting thoughts about flaws or failure are a hallmark of perfectionism OCD. There may be a great deal of discomfort and worry brought on by these frequent and bothersome thoughts.
  6. Perfectionist Standards: While having high standards is not always a bad thing, people who suffer from OCD and perfectionism sometimes create impossible expectations for themselves. They frequently have a persistent sense of dissatisfaction with their own work because they think that everything that falls short of perfection is a failure.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) as a Treatment

One very successful therapy method for treating Perfectionism OCD is exposure and response prevention (ERP). This type of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) aims to end the vicious loop of compulsions (repetitive actions) and obsessions (distressing thoughts).

  1. Recognising Obsessions: The first ERP stage is to recognise the intrusive thoughts or obsessions that feed perfectionism. Therapists collaborate extensively with patients to identify the particular ideas causing them to feel anxious or distressed.
  2. Exposure: In exposure treatment, the patient is purposefully exposed to circumstances that arouse their perfectionism-related fears. This exposure is done step-by-step, starting with less stressful scenarios and working your way up to more difficult ones. For instance, someone who fears making mistakes at work can begin by purposefully making a little mistake before progressively moving on to bigger problems.

Conclusion

Perfectionism OCD may seriously affect a person's life, resulting in sadness, anxiety, and decreased functioning. Identifying the symptoms is the first step in getting assistance. For those with Perfectionism OCD, exposure and response prevention (ERP) is a very successful therapy method that can offer relief. People are able to overcome their perfectionism and take back control of their life when they have the proper tools and instruction from a licensed therapist. Recall that accepting imperfection is acceptable since it is a necessary aspect of being human.
